Abortion

“Shouldn't We Permit Abortion Only to Save the Life of the Mother?"

Abortion is completely legal in more than one hundred nations.  In almost every case, population controllers first drove in the ultra-thin wedge of an abortion exception just to save the life of the mother.

       This is a brilliant strategy for two reasons.

       First, abortionists can easily stretch any law, no matter how strict or precisely written, into abortion on demand.  Since they falsely consider abortion to be safer than childbirth, pro-abortionists can easily justify all abortions under the “life of the mother” exception.  In fact, abortionists have claimed that all abortions are medically necessary.

       This is certainly not a new development.  For example, in 1980 abortionist Lise Fortier asserted that "Each and every pregnancy threatens a woman's life.  From a strict medical viewpoint, every pregnancy should be aborted."1  Even earlier, abortionist David Zbaraz claimed that all first‑trimester and most second‑trimester abortions are medically necessary since, as he alleged, they are safer than childbirth.2

       The second reason that the “life of the mother” exception is so pernicious is that it gets people in nations with pro-life laws accustomed to the concept of abortion so that it can be rapidly expanded in the future.  After all, if we can legalize abortion to save the life of the mother, why not legalize it to preserve her physical and mental health as well ― and then for social and economic reasons?

Rarity of the “Hard Cases”

       People habitually overestimate the number of abortions committed for the classic "hard cases" of rape and incest, eugenics and life and health of the mother, a common error that is not at all discouraged by pro-abortionists.

       Thirty years ago, Dr. Irving Cushner, Professor of Obstetrics at the UCLA School of Medicine, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.  When one of the Senators asked him how often abortions are necessary to save the life of the mother or to preserve her physical health, Dr. Cushner, who was strongly pro‑abortion, answered, "In this country, about one percent."3

       This number has not changed.  During the years 1996 to 2011, the states of Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Utah compiled data on the reasons that women obtain abortions.  Of the 1.3 million aborting women surveyed, only 1.03 percent replied that they were having abortions to protect their lives or physical health.4

       Modern medicine has virtually eliminated avoidable maternal deaths due to pregnancy, as many leading experts attested decades ago;

  • Dr. Alan Guttmacher of Planned Parenthood did more to promote and spread abortion on demand throughout the world than any other individual.  Nearly fifty years ago, he commented "Today it is possible for almost any patient to be brought through pregnancy alive, unless she suffers from a fatal disease such as cancer or leukemia, and if so, abortion would be unlikely to prolong, much less save the life."5  Certainly, with all of the advances in medicine since  then, cases in which a woman's pregnancy threatens her health are even rarer today.
  • In 1990, reformed abortionist Bernard Nathanson said that "The situation where the mother's life is at stake were she to continue a pregnancy is no longer a clinical reality.  Given the state of modern medicine, we can now manage any pregnant woman with any medical affliction successfully, to the natural conclusion of the pregnancy:  The birth of a healthy child."6
  • In 1974, the "Father of Fetology," Hymie Gordon, M.D., Director of Medical Genetics at the Mayo Clinic, said that "In more than 25 years now of medical practice, I have come to learn that if a woman is healthy enough to become pregnant, she is healthy enough to complete the term ― in spite of heart disease, liver disease, almost any disease.  As far as I'm concerned, there are no medical indications for terminating a pregnancy."7
  • In 1981, Dr. Jasper Williams, Jr., of the Bernard Hospital in Chicago, Past President of the National Medical Association, said that "Since 1953, I have never seen a patient die because she needed an abortion and it could not be performed.  Doctors now have the tools and the knowledge with which to work so that they can handle almost any disease a patient may have, whether that patient is pregnant or not, and without interrupting the pregnancy."8

       In those extremely rare cases when the mother's life truly is threatened by pregnancy (such as with cancer of the uterus or ectopic pregnancy), she may undergo an operation whose purpose is to save her life, even though the preborn child dies as an indirect result of the procedure.  This principle is known as the "double effect," and is described in the next column.

Life = Health

       Many public opinion polls show that a large majority of people do not want to pay for abortions, so pro‑abortionists grossly overestimate the alleged "dangers" of pregnancy and childbirth in order to frighten people into supporting public abortion funding.  They define a threat to the life of the mother in the same terms as a threat to her health;

  • Abortionist Michael Burnhill of the National Abortion Federation (NAF) said that a "life of the mother" exception would allow him to perform all abortions he considered "medically necessary," all those that would preserve a "condition in which one can actively participate in one's total life ... "9
  • According to another author, "A Colorado abortion clinic director claimed that his extensive research showed that carrying a pregnancy to term is about 100 times more life threatening than having an abortion.  He, therefore, considered any pregnancy life‑threatening and used that as justification, certifying that the mother's life was endangered."10
  • Abortionist Jane Hodgson testified under oath that “In my medical judgment, every pregnancy that is not wanted by the patient, I feel there is a medical indication to abort a pregnancy where it is not wanted.  In good faith, I would recommend on a medical basis, you understand, that, and it would be 100% ... I think they are all medically necessary ... I am considering the woman's physical, mental, emotional and social and welfare and family and environment and all that ... I am concerned with the quality of life, not physical existence.”11

       Hodgson also summarized the general pro‑abortion attitude when she said "A medically necessary abortion is any abortion a woman asks for."12

Summary

       Due to the principle of the “double effect,” surgical procedures that save the mother’s life while causing the undesired and unintended death of the preborn child are permissible, so an abortion exception to save the life of the mother is actually unnecessary.

       Pro-lifers must vigorously oppose the “mother’s life” abortion exception because of the inherent dishonesty of abortionists who expand it to mean abortion on demand.  Additionally, if surgical procedures intended to save the life of the mother are labeled “abortions” in those many countries that still have pro-life laws, people will get used to the idea of killing preborn children much more easily, paving the way for a rapid expansion of exceptions and eventual abortion on demand.

What does a Pro Life Volunteer in San Antonio look like?

What does a pro life volunteer in San Antonio look like today?  Well, if they're a volunteer with the San Antonio Coalition for Life they are peaceful, prayerful and law abiding.

This past Tuesday, as we kicked off the Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign, we got to see first hand the peaceful, prayerful presence of over 100 SACFL volunteers compared to the yelling and clanging of drums of about 15 Planned Parenthood counter protestors.

See for yourself by watching the video here: http://www.vimeo.com/20863230

Amongst the peaceful prayerful singing of the Divine Mercy Chaplet you hear the clanging drums of PP counter protestors yelling "abortion on demand- with no apologies!" .  While they walked through the crowd on the sidewalk yelling at prayer warriors "See, how does it feel to be yelled at? It's not nice is it?", I kept thinking They've obviously never been to a vigil when we were there

Because that's not what we're about.  We're not on the sidewalk to judge women and men who think that abortion is the answer they're so desperately looking for.  We are there to warn them about the dangers of abortion that they have NOT been fully informed about, give them a true look at the life that exists in their womb and offer loving, life affirming alternatives.  Our community is here with resources for women facing unplanned pregnancies.  We are here to help with diapers, clothing, furniture- basically anything a woman needs in order to continue her pregnancy.

I'd like to leave you with this final thought: as I first arrived on the sidewalk I came across the counter protestors holding a large sign.  Knowing very well the rules and laws regarding protest on the sidewalk, I saw that they were blocking the driveway.  I leaned over and told one of the women "Just to let you know we're not allowed to block the driveway because it's against the law".  She looked back at me and said "Oh, it's okay, we know them and they [Planned Parenthood] won't call the police on us".

Isn't that simple statement so truthful and telling of the what we see and encounter everyday in regards to Planned Parenthood?  They have NO regard for the laws that exists in order to protect.  Whether it be protecting a sex trafficking pimp, helping underage girls to get abortions without parental notification or providing medical abortions without the proper licensing, Planned Parenthood has shown time and time again that they have no problem with breaking the law....all to the achieve "abortion on demand- with no apologies".

The Power of Prayer

As human beings we all think that we have complete control over our lives.  It's often a big surprise to find out that, in fact, God is in control.  In the movie "Evan Almighty" (a highly recommended family flick!) God laughs as the main character Evan says something to the effect of "I can't do this- I have plans!".  In fact, God often has plans for our lives far greater than we could ever imagine.

For Abby Johnson, the ex-director of the Bryan, TX Planned Parenthood clinic, who exactly one year ago today decided to walk away from her job and join the pro lifers on the other side of the fence, God had much larger plans.  Abby has said she expected that after the national news broke of her departure from PP that she would find another job and her family would get back to their daily lives in Bryan.  To her surprise God had additional plans for Abby and now she has become an strong, beautiful example of the pro life community.  For the prayer warriors who stood on the opposite side of the fence, praying fervently for so many years for Abby and all the doctors and staff of the Bryan Planned Parenthood, Abby's departure has been a testament to the power of prayer.

Often we pray hoping for an answer right away.  But like the story of the widow in the bible who kept appealing to the unjust judge for justice against her adversary (Luke 18:1-8), we must persevere in praying for an end to abortion and, even better, praying for the staff, nurses and doctors of abortion clinics.  If there is no one to perform the abortion then the practice will, naturally, end.

Our biggest weapon to end abortion is our prayer.  Prayer in our homes every day can work wonders.  Prayer, with an added physical presence in front of abortion clinics, has shown to work miracles.  We have heard from multiple women, and new grandparents, who changed their minds about abortion upon driving up to the clinic and seeing prayer warriors standing peacefully on the sidewalk.  In the past we have witnessed desperate friends, family and fathers of children in danger of abortion appeal to the help of prayer warriors and sidewalk counselors in front of the abortion clinic.   The San Antonio Coalition for Life has even documented a saved life by text message!  The father, locked out of the Planned Parenthood because of his opposition to the "choice" for abortion, with the help of a sidewalk counselor texted his girlfriend inside the building.   Later on she came out after changing her mind to have an abortion.

So many of us want to see and end to abortion now- expecting that our prayer will be answered right away.  When abortions continue to happen each week some of these same people get frustrated and feel like their prayers are going unanswered.  In our daily prayers we have to remember that, not only do we have to persevere in asking, we may not always SEE the direct result of our prayer.

How many women, contemplating abortion, drove by the abortion clinic to see a "Pregnant?  FREE Help" sign and called for the support she needed to continue her pregnancy?  How many men saw the prayerful warriors on the sidewalk and stepped up to be the man and father that God wanted them to be?

We may never know.  What we do know is that prayer has power and some day we will see the answer to our prayers.  Someday we will live in a world where all life in cherished: Born and Unborn.

The Choice of Two Paths

Tags:

In our family we love the Christmas Season.  Everyone you pass seems to be put in a better mood just at the thought of Christmas Day inching closer and closer.  Each year, as we near the date of our Lord’s birth, I think about the choice that His mother, Mary made.  We see in the bible the story of the prostitute near death by stoning. She was a sinner who had chosen a path that did not lead to heaven. The people of her town had chosen to punish her for her crimes. It was Jesus who stepped in to save this woman, not only from the stones that were so near to being hurled at her, but He also saved her from herself. He looks on her with pity and says to the crowd of angry townspeople those beautiful words “let the one who has not sinned throw the first stone”. Jesus then looks to her and says “Go and sin no more”.

You can’t help but wonder that as He looked at that woman, shamed by her path and full of sin, that he did not think about the danger His own mother was in upon accepting the Lord’s plan for her life. Mary was a sinless woman, even saved from the stain of original sin, and yet it was very likely that she could be stoned to death at the announcement of her pregnancy. When the angel Gabriel came to announce God’s plan to Mary she was given a choice, as we all are, to choose a path. She decided to follow the path that the Lord had set out for her, knowing what the implications to her life might be. Mary did not know what the future would hold for her, especially after Joseph decided to quietly divorce her, but she did not run out and seek an abortion (and yes, they did exist even in those days). She still trusted that the Lord would provide what she needed. Again an angel comes in to view and Joseph marries Mary to provide our Lord with the wonderful family that is needed to nurture his growth and strength.

Each day, women become pregnant unexpectedly. They are given a choice of two paths, one that leads to what God has chosen for their lives and one that leads to abortion. We have to remember that these same women have already chosen a path of sexual activity that led to pregnancy- but given the choice that has been made it is important that we be there to help them find their way back to the path that leads to God.

I have spent a lot of time lately talking to my boys about the two paths. I use it often as a way of steering them in the right way to behave. Often, they hear me say “You have a path to choose at this moment- you can choose the path that leads to a happy and fun day- or you can choose the path that leads to punishment for disobeying”. They invariably look at me and say“I want to go on the path that leads to good things”.

We all want to be on the path that leads to good things. When we get lost and fall away from the path, God puts people in our lives to help us find our way back. There are two paths in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic. There is one that leads to the sidewalk counselors, there to help with whatever a woman needs to continue her pregnancy, and one that leads in to the building for an abortion. God has helped to put the sidewalk counselors in the path of these scared women, to help them back on the path to heaven. Sadly many women are blinded by the tree’s blocking their view from the “angels” waiting to help them. How often does our Lord cry at the thought of so many of his children choosing the path of disobedience? How often does He weep at the thought of the life, meant for so much good in this world, that has been lost to abortion? How many children, meant to cure cancer or AIDS or find a way to power an entire city on water alone, have been lost because their mother chose the wrong path?

Yet, as many of these women choose the follow the wrong path, there are a few who find their way back. We have been blessed to see over 60 of these women choose the path that leads to heaven. They step in to the unknown- trusting that God will provide- and He does! We are blessed to be there as prayer warriors and sidewalk counselors- working for God to end abortion through prayer and presence. How blessed are we to be his vessels! As a sidewalk counselor we ask the Holy Spirit to speak through us as we talk to the women going in for abortions. We hope and pray that the words that come from our mouths are coming directly from God- not words of anger pointing out the sins of others- but words of love and compassion. We pray that the Lord uses us to help just one more woman to find her way to the path to heaven- bringing with her the innocent child that God has planned for this world. We hope that just one woman will “Go and sin no more”.
